Safeguarding Children

What is safeguarding children?

Safeguarding children refers to the process of protecting children from abuse, neglect, and ensuring their well-being. It involves promoting their welfare and creating an environment where they can grow and develop in a safe and healthy manner. This can include measures such as providing a safe physical environment, promoting emotional well-being, and preventing the risk of harm.

Working Together to Safeguard Children

What are the four main areas of abuse?

The four main areas of abuse are commonly categorised as:

  1. Physical Abuse:
Involves the use of force that results in bodily injury, pain, or impairment. This can include hitting, slapping, shaking, kicking, or other actions that cause physical harm.
  2. Emotional or Psychological Abuse:
Involves actions or behaviors that cause emotional harm, such as constant criticism, humiliation, intimidation, or isolation. Emotional abuse can have lasting effects on a child's mental health and well-being.
  3. Sexual Abuse:
Involves any non-consensual sexual activity or exploitation. This can include rape, molestation, incest, exposure to explicit materials, or any other sexual act imposed on an individual without their consent.
  4. Neglect:
Involves the failure to provide the necessary care, supervision, and support to meet a child's basic needs. Neglect can manifest in various forms, including physical neglect (failure to provide food, shelter, or medical care), emotional neglect (withholding love and emotional support), or educational neglect (failure to ensure access to education).
